To coordinate and manage the maintenance of the University’s General Machinery Regulation (hereafter referred to as GMR) portfolio to ensure compliance with the requirements of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations 85 of 1993 and mitigate the University`s exposure to health and safety risks arising from inadequate maintenance of General Machinery. Conduct inspections, identify General Machinery maintenance requirements and ensure General Machinery compliance to requirements of the Occupational Health and Safety Act.

Key Responsibilities

  • Inspect the various areas assigned to Faculties, Schools and Departments on a regular basis in liaison with the appointed maintenance management contractors, area managers and the assigned OHS & E representatives.
  • Effect remedial work and/or action to minimize risk to life and property where contraventions are identified, in consultation with the maintenance management contractor and the OHS & E representative.
  • Co-ordinate and conduct bi-annual inspections of all fume hoods installed in the areas assigned to the GMR Compliance Co-ordinator in consultation with the appointed outsourced maintenance management contractors.
  • Identify non-compliance and arrange for remedial work to be implemented to minimise the University’s exposure to risk.
  • Arrange for the regular inspection, maintenance and / or replacement of all OHS signage inclusive of evacuation plans, as may become necessary from time to time due to normal wear and tear and / or acts of vandalism.
  • Ensure that all evacuation plans are posted within buildings assigned to the GMR Compliance Coordinator are updated continuously.
  • In consultation with the GMR2 arrange and coordinate the regular servicing of all fire extinguishers, fire hose reels and other fire fighting equipment within the area assigned to the General Machinery Compliance Coordinator by approved specialist contractors and / or suppliers, and keep an accurate record thereof as required by legislation.
  • Coordinate and conduct the regular inspections of all sprinkler and fire alarm systems installed within the area of the University’s property portfolio in consultation with the appointed outsourced maintenance management contractor’s area manager in order to ensure current ASIB certification and minimise the risk to the University.
  • Ensure the registration and compliance of all flammable liquid stores with the local Authority and conduct regular inspections to verify compliance by faculties, schools and departments with all relevant legislation and guidelines in relation to the operation of such facilities to minimise the risk to the University.
  • Maintain adequate and accurate records of all fire extinguishers, hose reels indicating type, location and service history as well as all sprinkler systems and fire alarms installed, inspecting equipment regularly, noting losses and / or any irregularities.
  • Ensuring that any equipment losses are reported to line management immediately and following up with line management to be aware of status of replacement.
  • Collate and review the monthly inspection reports as received from the appointed OHS & E Officers within the area assigned to the OHS & E Officers and assist with coordinating and implementing the required remedial work in consultation with the appointed outsourced maintenance management contractor.
  • Compile and submit in consultation with the GMR2 and the Financial Manager a monthly report as per agreed format.
  • Inspect work done by contractors and / or suppliers, in order to verify and approve invoices for payment.
